NIS+ to NIS

Data and /etc/init.d/inetsvc

The following will require "at-risk"-, but not necessarily down-time:

• Cosmos and Eric have the same pkgs installed --- both NIS/YP and NIS+ :

          prompt$ pkginfo -i | grep -i nis

  • certainly Eric has all the yp-server stuff installed in /usr/lib/netsvc/yp
  
  
• to migrate "downwards" from NIS+ to NIS simply:
  • migrate data (one can simply use niscat to grab info and stick it into the yp/nis maps), though much of this will not be needed;
  • it should be possible to migrate via "flat" files so that at all times the name-services are running ok (from the user point of view), though there is obviously some risk associated with this;
  • ensure the contents of /var/yp and /var/nis is such that the init script, /etc/init.d/inetsvc, starts the service we want (NIS, not NIS+ as at present);

/etc/nsswitch.conf

Currently this is configured to use nisplus and "flat" files (i.e., those in /etc:

• in particular

          passwd:	    files nisplus
          group:	    files nisplus
      

  will be changed to "files nis ldap" (and at an intermediate stage to "files nisplus ldap") whilst eUMISTifying Eric...

          automount:  nisplus files 
      

  ...which will be changed to "files nis" (move all data from nis+ to nis), and...

     
          hosts:     dns nisplus files
      

  ...this ought to be "files dns" and ignore nis/nisplus; also...

     
  
          services:     nisplus files  --->  files (/etc/services, 
                                                    move necessary data)
  
          networks:     nisplus files  --->  files (/etc/neworks, 
                                                    move necessary data)
  
          protocols:    nisplus files  --->  files (/etc/protocols,
                                                    move necessary data)
  
          rpc:          nisplus files  --->  files (/etc/rpc
